If you are planning to use logs, they will mound up over the fire pit ledge surface, which makes using a flat aluminum cover impossible. You could either let the logs cool and remove them to add the cover, or use a cover with raised sidewalls. You could also wait for the logs to cool and use a soft cover over the whole thing.
A Ready To Finish Kit does not have the pan recessed down as far as a standard fire pit, unless you have a very thick top cap. So you will need taller sidewalls than a normal pit would.
All covers are meant to sit on the fire pit ledge surface, outside of the burn area. Their weight keeps them in place. Sidewalls are available on Arbor Wood covers, but not aluminum covers.
We definitely do not recommend putting logs on top of fire glass since they get very hot and will melt the glass. You will need a base layer of lava rock or lava pebbles to cover your burner jets by about 1/2" and then put your logs directly on the lava, not the burner jets. From there, you can use fire glass as an accent around the outside, where the logs are not resting.
