Yes, gas fire pits do require air vents (at least 2). Placing 2 air vents at opposing sides down low creates a cross-breeze within the fire pit. That breeze allows any excess gas to vent out so that it does not get trapped or pool up. Propane, for example, is heavier than air. Excess gas sinks down below the burner and plate and can ignite, causing an explosion and creating damage and injury. For most gas fire pits, it is recommend that there is at least 18 square inches of venting per vent. Some may ask if venting is required when using natural gas in an outdoor fire pit. The question comes up because natural gas is lighter than air and rises up, which would mean excess gas would just dissipate in the atmosphere. However, every fire pit is different, so you should speak with your contractor or plumber regarding this question.
