Do you put anything under the logs?

Our current set up is a gas log in a rack. Below that is almost like a fluffy material.

In fire pit applications, most often we recommend a base layer of lava rock or lava pebbles under the logs to support them. However, every build is different. If this is an outdoor fireplace with a grate, lava rock might not be needed.
